Atoq Navarro is the true main antagonist of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, with appearances as a multiplayer skin in Among Thieves, Drake's Deception, and A Thief's End. He was of Peruvian descent, a so-called mestizo, meaning mixed-race (between Spanish and indigenous parents), and led Gabriel Roman's private mercenary army. His knowledge of Inca mythology and the Quechua language was instrumental in acquiring Peruvian artifacts for the crime lord.[1]

He was voiced and motion-captured by Robin Atkin Downes.

History[]

Prior to Drake's Fortune[]

Navarro was found in a slum by Roman, who seems to have raised him in some manner. He served as Roman's second-in-command throughout the events of Drake's Fortune. Both wanted to have the El Dorado statue. However, while Roman only wanted the gold to compensate for the money that Victor Sullivan owed him, Navarro secretly wanted the treasure for his own agenda.

Drake's Fortune[]

Time's Up 1

Navarro and Roman's encounter with Nate.

Navarro and Roman were first encountered in the Amazon rainforest by Nathan Drake in "A Surprising Find", after he swam back to shore after exploring a German U-boat that was stuck in the river. Roman and Navarro were accompanied by mercenaries and were holding Sullivan at gunpoint. Navarro confiscated Nate's weapon, as well as the Kriegsmarine map he found. While holding his AK-47 at him, Navarro questioned the map's relation to El Dorado, to which Sully explained that the Germans were also after the treasure. Roman then shot Sully, which was quickly followed by an explosion from inside the submarine, knocking everyone over and giving Nate the chance to flee.

During "Trapped", Elena showed Nate footage she recorded of Navarro waiting for Roman, who was escorting Sullivan onto a helicopter in the Drowned City, revealing that Sully was still alive and was either held captive or working with them.

Eavesdropping

Later on in "Going Underground", as Nate was exploring the underground catacombs, he overheard a conversation between Roman, Navarro, and Eddy Raja, in which Eddy and his crew were being dismissed by Roman for not fulfilling his duties to capture Nate and keep the island secure, despite Eddy's claims that something was killing all of his men. The second Eddy got furious and drew his gun, Navarro aimed his gun at Raja, forcing him to take no further action. After Eddy left, Roman turned to Navarro and asked if he was worth what he was paying him, as he had not yet found the treasure. Navarro replied that he wanted someone cheap. Roman chastised him for relying on Sullivan, wondering if he has left his brains back in the slums where he found him, and then wondered if the treasure would be even worth all the trouble. Navarro assured him that the statue was worth more than he could imagine.

El Goddamn Dorado 1

Navarro appeared in the bunker, along with Gabriel Roman, holding Elena Fisher hostage during "Unwelcome Guests". As they left with Elena, Navarro taunted Nate, pushing him to enact this revenge on him. Roman and Navarro eventually located El Dorado, underneath the church with the help of the second map from the bunker. Later, in "Gold and Bones", when Nate and Sully failed to rescue Elena and were held at gunpoint by Navarro's men, Navarro prepared to hatch his plan to betray Roman by first having him open up the treasure of El Dorado. Upon doing so, Roman was exposed to a rotting corpse, which released air that he accidentally inhaled. This led to Roman transforming into a descendant and attacking Navarro, prompting Navarro to shoot him in the head.

Shortly after, a helicopter arrived, and Navarro's men began tying the treasure down so that it could be lifted up and away. Before making his escape, Navarro revealed he had been planning all along to sell off the statue to the highest bidder as a bioweapon. Within moments, descendants began swarming the room and attacking everyone, while Navarro managed to make it safely to the chopper with Elena. They flew off, but Nate managed to catch up with them.

The End 1

Navarro defeated by Nate.

Nate's interference caused the pilot to get killed, thereby resulting in the helicopter losing control and crashing onto a large freighter. Here, Nate had a series of shootouts with Navarro, in the final chapter "Showdown", to rescue Elena and stop the treasure from making it off the island. After finally managing to knock Navarro out, Nate tried to help Elena up, shortly before Navarro regained consciousness. Nate, spotting the rope that tied El Dorado to the helicopter surrounding Navarro's foot, pushed the helicopter off of the landing platform. This caused it to fall into the ocean, dragging El Dorado with it, and causing the rope to wrap itself around Navarro's leg, ultimately sending him down into the water as well.

Multiplayer[]

Though Navarro does not appear in Among Thieves, his name is seen once in Nathan Drake's journal, scratched out due to his drowning. However, he does appear in the Drake's Fortune Multiplayer Pack, with all new quotes. He is also available for the multiplayer for Drake's Deception through the Classic Skin Pack #1 bundle and in the multiplayer of A Thief's End through buying a vanity chest. In all cases, Robin Atkin Downes retains his role as Navarro's voice actor.

Behind the scenes[]

Though never made into a real chapter, "Chapter 3 and a half" was based on Navarro's major part of being a villain. Nate and Elena snuck into an airstrip to get back Sully's plane, but the area was littered with Navarro's mercenaries. Nate followed a mountain path down to a hangar, and once reaching it, he had to fight a group of mercenaries. Nate found a gun and blew up barrels to kill them. Elena and Nate were then fighting their way through the hangar to escape, upon getting Sully's plane. Eventually, Navarro appeared in an armored truck and began firing at both of them with a chaingun. Nate figured out that the only way to defeat him was to detonate explosive barrels, causing a telephone pole to topple onto his truck. Elena and Nate then jumped in the plane and flew away.
