Chloe Frazer is one of the main characters of the Uncharted franchise. She serves as the tritagonist overall in the video game series, making her debut as one of the two deuteragonists of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves where she is one of Nathan Drake's love interests. She subsequently appears in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, in which she serves as a supporting character in the first half of the game, and is referenced in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End before becoming the playable main protagonist of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. She also appears in the Uncharted film serving as the tritagonist, played by Sophia Ali.
She is an Indian-Australian treasure hunter and thief for hire; she's a skilled professional whose reputation often makes her highly demanded in the criminal underworld. She was also an associate, a major ally, and a former love interest to fellow treasure hunter Nathan Drake, and has also worked with other people such as Harry Flynn, Charlie Cutter, Nadine Ross, and Samuel Drake. In The Lost Legacy, it's revealed that she is half-Indian from her father's side.
In Among Thieves and Drake's Deception, Chloe is voiced and motion-captured by Claudia Black, who also recorded lines for the character in the multiplayer mode of A Thief's End. In The Lost Legacy, Claudia reprises her role as Chloe, while Michelle Lee provided motion-capture for the character.
History[]
Uncharted comic[]
As Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan plan to steal the Amber Seal (that reveals the whereabouts of the Amber Room in Agartha) from a black auction being held in Volkov Castle, Ukraine, they arrive the next night scouting out the castle grounds, marking patrol routes and a secret entrance. But while they're doing this, Nate is discovered by Chloe, who points her gun at him. As she is about to shoot Nate, he is able to throw dust into her eyes and escape. At the auction, Nate is caught by Russian mob leader Mykola Rusnak for snooping around but Chloe claims he's with her. Nate doesn't thank her and plans to steal the Amber Seal before the auction. However, Chloe appears to be trying to steal the artifact too, and she and Nate get into a scuffle. After the fight, they stumble upon the Amber Seal, but Chloe accidentally sets off the alarm. Nate and Chloe escape outside and Chloe flees while Nate takes the Seal for himself.
Later that night, Drake and Sully are rescued by Chloe from Rusnak, who had held them captive. The trio drives away in a jeep and Chloe performs a risky maneuver to send the pursuing Rusnak off the side of a cliff to his death. Nate and Sully allow Chloe to tag along with them to find the Amber Room.
After the train ride to the North Pole, Nate, Sully, and Chloe locate the airstrip where Michael and Rose Doughty (siblings who are also searching for the Amber Room) are about to depart to Agartha. The trio plans to steal the Doughtys' plane, but they are caught and the siblings force Sully to fly them to Agartha or else they will kill Chloe. Sully complies and flies the plane through a gorge into a cave. As Sully stays behind to fix the damages to the plane, the group finds Sir Richard Byrd's encampment and Chloe discovers that the Amber Room was destroyed. As Michael and Rose are arguing about how to restore their family name, Nate and Chloe escape through the main doors leading to Agartha.
Nate and Chloe are pursued by the Doughtys and their hired mercenaries. After the two jump over a gap, they come across a bridge made of World War II planes, suspended over a river of lava. Chloe realizes that Nate allowed her to tag along because he is attracted to her. As they continue on in a tunnel, Chloe accidentally falls into a hole. Nate slides down into the hole to find Chloe unharmed, but the Doughtys have caught up to them. However, the Smoking Gods (creatures that live in Agartha) attack and kill the mercenaries. After Chloe saved Nate from a Smoking God, she grabs a rocket launcher and shoots the walls to create a cave-in, holding the Smoking Gods back. The group then sees Agartha ahead of them in the tunnel.
As Michael and Rose marvel at the city, Chloe pulls out her camera and takes a picture of a flying machine for her client. Michael plans to kill Nate, but Chloe pulls her gun out on him. Rose intervenes, resulting in a scuffle between her and Chloe with Rose defeating her. While Michael holds Nate and Chloe at gunpoint, Rose finds a wall made of diamonds that are holding back a flow of lava. Rose and Michael get into another argument with Rose killing him and she pulls a diamond out of the wall, releasing the lava. The lava flow kills Rose while Chloe and Nate run. The Smoking Gods pursue them as the city collapses. Nate falls into a river of lava, but Chloe comes back to save him by having Sully fly in with the plane. The trio escapes through a volcano as it erupts, and wash ashore on a beach.
Later that night while Sully is flirting with women on the beach, Chloe and Nate go to a hotel room and have sex. The next morning, Chloe leaves a note on the bed for Nate that says: "See you around, cowboy. No regrets." Chloe is seen driving away in a jeep on the phone with her client. She tells him that she has obtained pictures of the flying machines in Agartha and wants her money ready for her.
Among Thieves[]
Nathan Drake is taking time out at a bar when he is approached by Chloe and Harry Flynn who ask him to assist them in stealing a Mongolian oil lamp from an Istanbul museum that may hold the answer to the location of Marco Polo's lost fleet. Before they leave, Chloe finds Nate taking a rest in his hotel room, and having dated years ago, they argue about him walking out on her. However, they reconcile and decide to go through with the job as planned, but then plan on running away together after taking their cut of the profits.
Flynn and Nate acquire the lamp, which contains a map showing that the Lost Fleet had been transporting the Cintamani Stone from Shambhala, before being thrown ashore on Borneo by a tsunami. Taking the map, Flynn betrays Nate by shooting the museum's display cases, thus alerting the guards. Nate is arrested and imprisoned for three months before Victor Sullivan and Chloe secures his release.
Flynn brings the information to the Serbian war criminal Zoran Lazarevic. They work together to try and find the Cintamani Stone which supposedly grants immortality to the one who controls it. They, along with Chloe (who is acting as a double agent, secretly helping Nate), travel to Borneo in search of the Lost Fleet. Chloe assists Nate and Sully in their search for the Cintamani Stone by setting up a distraction along the edge of Lazarevic's camp with C4 charges.
Eventually, the trio finds a tomb containing the bodies of Polo's shipmates, as well as a golden Tibetan Phurba and a map that has a message on it from Polo, pointing towards a specific temple in Nepal. They also learn that the Lost Fleet never took the Cintamani Stone from Shambhala, and deduce that Lazarevic is in fact trying to pick up Polo's exact trail back to Shambhala.
As they leave the tomb, Chloe "betrays" them as Flynn and Lazarevic's men appear. Chloe takes the map from them and gives it to Flynn. Flynn learns of the temple in Nepal and tells Chloe and two soldiers to take Nate and Sullivan back to Lazarevic to be killed. However, Chloe shoots the two soldiers and tells Nate to go to Nepal, where she will meet him. Rather than go to Nepal, Sullivan decides to take a vacation.
In Nepal, Chloe assists Nate in finding the hidden temple. Along the way, they encounter Elena Fisher and Jeff, Fisher's cameraman. Elena is in Nepal reporting on the crimes of Lazarevic, who has turned the city into a warzone searching for the Cintamani Stone. When they find the temple, Chloe and Nate complete a series of puzzles to learn that the Cintamani Stone and Shambhala are in the Himalayas.
As they exit the temple, Lazarevic's men ambush them, and Jeff is wounded. Nate insists on escaping Nepal with Elena and the injured Jeff, despite Chloe's strong disapproval. The group eventually reaches a dead end. Hearing more soldiers coming up behind them, Chloe once again betrays the group, holding them at gunpoint when Flynn and the mercenaries show up in the room and Flynn orders her to be taken to a train. Jeff is executed by Lazarevic, and after failing to bargain with him, Nate and Elena make an escape.
Nate and Elena are separated when he boards Lazarevic's train in an effort to rescue Chloe. After fighting through several waves of Lazarevic's mercenaries and Lieutenant Draza, Nate finally catches up with Chloe. However, she refuses to leave with him, stating that she didn't want to be rescued in the first place. They argue, but Flynn shoots him in the abdomen. Chloe manages to stop Flynn from killing Nate long enough for him to retreat into another car. As he collapses, he shoots a gas canister in an effort to kill the soldiers advancing toward him, but in doing so, derails the train, which is left hanging over a cliff.
Chloe doesn't see Nate again until much later. Having survived the train crash, Nate, with Elena's help, trails Lazarevic through the Himalayas to reacquire the Phurba dagger. He finds Chloe, Flynn, and Lazarevic in the room believed to hold the key to Shambhala. Lazarevic is angry that Flynn has been no help so far. When Chloe is alone, Nate takes the dagger from her, before finally opening the gate to Shambhala.
Nate leaves Elena in the care of Chloe when he goes to kill Lazarevic, and tells Chloe to escape Shambhala immediately. After defeating Lazarevic, Nathan saves Chloe from a Guardian, and the three of them quickly evacuate the city as it begins to crumble. They return to a nearby Tibetan Village, and Chloe decides that it's her turn to walk away, realizing that Nate is in love with Elena. Sully promptly chases after her.
Drake's Deception[]
Since the events of Among Thieves, Chloe has remained in the business of treasure hunting and has returned to help Nate in his quest to find the Atlantis of the Sands. Whilst Nate, Sully, and Charlie Cutter act out the setup in order to flush out Marlowe, Chloe waits in her van for them to return. Once the setup has run smoothly, she follows Marlowe's car, watching it disappear through a green door. When the others arrive, she hands them torches and guns and the four of them investigate the garage. Inside, Nate discovers a secret entrance to Marlowe's base. Sully, Nate, and Cutter go deeper underground, while Chloe waits up top with the getaway van. Chloe is waiting when her three allies emerge, and they escape in her van. When they reach safety, the four of them discuss the next step. They decide that Nate and Sully will travel to France, while Cutter and Chloe will go to Syria.
After exploring the Syrian castle, Chloe and Cutter bump into Nate and Sully. Nate had feared that Talbot's men had captured them, but instead realizes that Chloe's phone was broken (as usual) and Cutter had not topped up his pre-paid phone. The four of them fight through the castle until they reach the pillars marking the entrance to the crypt. Using Cutter's notes, Chloe discovers that the entrance lies at the middle pillar. They make their way into the crypt. Cutter, drugged by Talbot, attacks Nate, clutching at his neck. Chloe begs Cutter to stop, and he snaps out of it, letting go of Drake.
After acquiring the amulet, the heroes hear Talbot's agents searching for them. They quickly discover an exit, but this only leads to Talbot. The four heroes are separated from Talbot and his men by a deadly drop. Cutter shoots Talbot after pretending to still be drugged, and the four of them run for it. Chloe, Sully, and Nate make it to safety, while Cutter ends up trapped on a tower, confronted by Marlowe and, much to his shock, a very much alive Talbot. They light a fire before him. Chloe finds it unbearable.
Eventually Cutter jumps, breaking his leg. This forces Sully to carry him out of the castle whilst Nate and Chloe fend off Marlowe's agents. They come across a tour bus and steal it to escape. Chloe confronts Nate on the bus, explaining it was too close. She tries to convince him to abandon the quest, but Cutter warns Nate that if he does he will never forgive him. As he later continues onto Yemen with Nate, Sullivan confirms to Elena that Chloe backed out when Cutter broke his leg.
A Thief's End[]
A letter from Chloe can be found in the chapter A Normal Life. The letter from Chloe describes a job Nate might be interested in should he reconsider retirement. While Nate is tempted he ultimately declines having retired
The Lost Legacy[]
Sometime before the events of the game Chloe met Sam Drake, Nate's older brother, and began working with him on various jobs. They began searching for the tusk of Ganesh together with Sam going ahead to do recon as Indian warlord Asav was also interested in obtaining the tusk while Chloe made other arrangements. However Sam went missing forcing Chloe to search for him and hired Nadine Ross to assist her with Asav's men but didn't tell her about Sam's involvement having been told of their bad history from Nate.
In India, Chloe searches for the legendary tusk of Ganesh, the son of Hindu god Shiva, who lost the tusk while defending his father's temple. Chloe's own father was killed by bandits while searching for the tusk. Chloe slips past insurgents and meets up Nadine. They sneak into the office of the insurgents' leader, Asav, a former acquaintance of Nadine, who wants to use the tusk to rally India into a civil war. Chloe and Nadine steal a map pointing toward the tusk within the ancient Hoysala Empire and a disc that acts as a key.
In India's Western Ghats, Chloe and Nadine follow the trail of several towers emblazoned with Hindu weapons: Ganesh's trident, Shiva's bow, and the axe of Parashurama, who used the axe to remove the tusk. The trail leads them to one of Hoysala's two capitals, Halebidu, whose last emperor left to be conquered by the Persians seemingly out of vanity. They realize the emperor left a false trail; the tusk is at the older capital, Belur. On the way there, they escape Asav and his men, but lose the disc. While spying on Asav's forces, Nadine sees her old enemy Samuel Drake; she realizes he is Asav's expert. When she expresses her intention to kill Sam, primarily due to the events that transpired in Libertalia, Chloe reveals she was working with him before he was abducted. Feeling angry and betrayed, Nadine separates from Chloe, but they make amends.
At Belur, they navigate several puzzles before being captured by Asav, who having realized that Sam is no expert and was misleading them the whole time, forces Chloe to use the disc to reveal the tusk. In the process, she discovers that Ganesh allowed Parashurama to cut off his tusk; as Shiva gave the axe to him, Ganesh did not want to shame his father by proving the axe useless. Asav triggers a trap and leaves Chloe, Nadine, and Sam to drown. Chloe picks the locks on their handcuffs and they escape. Despite tensions between Nadine and Sam, the three chase after Asav to take back the tusk. Nadine is enraged to find that Asav is working with Shoreline, the mercenary group she used to run and from which she was ousted.
Asav trades the tusk to Orca, Nadine's former lieutenant, who now runs Shoreline. Chloe, Nadine, and Sam down Orca's helicopter and learn that Asav traded the tusk for a bomb he plans to detonate in the capital and trigger civil war. Orca pulls a gun on Nadine, but Sam saves her, allowing her to shoot Orca dead. Commandeering a jeep, the three catch up to the train carrying the bomb. The women board the train and fight through Asav's men. Chloe and Sam switch the tracks, redirecting the train away from the city. In the engine car, Chloe and Nadine fight Asav, whose leg becomes trapped under the bomb. They jump to safety before the train falls from a collapsed bridge and explodes, killing Asav. Chloe and Nadine decide to partner up, while Sam reacts with horror at their intentions to donate the valuable tusk to the Ministry of Culture.
Though born in India, Chloe and her mother were sent to Australia while her father stayed to chase down the Tusk. A few weeks after the move, her father sent her a Ganesh figurine – the only evidence he had been to the ancient city of Belur. An indeterminable time prior to Lost Legacy's events, but what Chloe classifies as "a few decades," her father's camp was ambushed by bandits after the Ministry of Culture financed one last expedition. His body was then found by the local authorities weeks later.
Characteristics[]
Appearance[]
Chloe is physically very attractive, and is constantly seen as such, this being one of the main reasons Elena appears to be jealous of her when she turns up with Nate. Tall, with long dark hair tied into a ponytail, usually wearing clothes to display her figure, she is described by the developers as "one of their favorite characters to create". Chloe's height is 5'8" (1.73 m).[1]
Lead character artist Sze Jones has said:
"Chloe has a very strong and unique personality. The biggest challenge in working on her for Uncharted 3 was not only to retain the original likeness of Chloe, but also to portray both the sensual and warrior sides of her. To achieve this, we invested tremendous energy and time in her skin-tone balance; layers of skin blemishes and subtle beauty marks were meticulously placed in order to create a natural, girl-next-door look without applying too many artificial cosmetics. Chloe's eyebrows are among her most distinguishing 'trademark' features: it was a challenge to control the weight of their thickness against her pale, olive skin without them looking masculine."
Personality[]
Chloe has a dry sense of humor and a rather complicated personality, with Amy Hennig describing her as the "darker side of Nate, and the bad girl to Elena's very innocent girl-next-door". Initially, she appears to value her own well-being above all else, but her attitude changes towards the end of Uncharted 2. Chloe is first and foremost a survivor; that is, she displays this attitude. She is very willing to walk away from situations she knows are above her accepted danger and is frivolous with human life that is not her own. This is seen with Jeff, as she is ready to leave him behind compared to the more idealistic Nate and Elena. It is also seen when she abandons the mission in Uncharted 3 after Cutter broke his leg. This originates from the death of her father who was determined to make a grand discovery and refused to walk away from his mission, eventually leading to his death and her family splintering apart. Despite this, she is willing to put her life at risk for those she cares about. Cutter was presented in a very similar situation to Jeff. Though his wounds were not mortal he still slowed the group down significantly.
She is quick to take action and stays positive in dangerous situations. She is intelligent and very aware of her limits. Like Sully and Elena, Chloe is against Nate finding Ubar and attempts to talk him out of it, knowing that he is risking all their lives for no real gain.
The events of The Lost Legacy drastically change Chloe’s personality, likely due to Nate's (and by extension Elena's) idealism having somewhat rubbed off on her after having spent considerable time with them. Initially, she remained apathetic to the civil war occurring in India, stating somberly over the penthouse of Asav filled with stolen artifacts “it’s not my fight”. She had little hesitance in destroying blockades that were hundreds of years old that hindered her and Nadine’s mission in the Western Ghats, initially. After telling Nadine about the death of her father and discovering he actually completed his mission by finding Belur, Chloe gains more respect for Indian culture, becoming disgusted that Asav would desecrate the legacy of his people by destroying its ancient city and selling the Tusk of Ganesh for a bomb. Her caring nature is shown by how she willingly volunteers to stop an entire city being destroyed by Asav for no financial gain and finally giving the Tusk to the Ministry of Culture. She is suggested to sell it on the black market, which she finds disgraceful, since she considers it a representation of the Hoysala people and culture.
Movie Chloe Frazer[]
The movie incarnation of Chloe is much more selfish. Initially, she seems similar to her game counterpart by betraying Nate and Sully the first two times in the film, due to her mistrust of Sully (due to Sully apparently deceiving her in the past and his poor reputation) and Nate being an accomplice of Sully. However, she also doesn't tell Nate the truth about Sam and works with Moncada, someone who is willing to kill to get what he wants and hired Braddock, the person who supposedly killed Sam. Furthermore, when given the opportunity, she steals the coordinates to the treasure (a decoy left by Nate to test Chloe), even though Nate was the one to uncover the treasure's true location by clues that were left to him by his brother, has not done anything to betray her and is no longer with Sully(who also deceived Nate) at that point. When she realizes that she stole the wrong coordinate's, she's angry at Nate and Sully, even though it's her own fault that she ended up empty-handed.
However, this version of Chloe is shown to have some good in her at times. At their first meeting, Chloe warns Nate about Sully's deceitful nature. She doesn't run Nate over with her car while he's talking to her and she doesn't shoot Nate when stealing the map, even though it would have been much easier for her to kill or seriously injure Nate and Sully to get what she wanted. She would share with Nate the story of how she found a valuable treasure as a child and showed it to her father, hoping it would end up in a museum, only for him to sell it on the black market, take the money and abandon his family, leaving her with trust issues. In a conversation with Moncada while boarding the plane, despite saying that she doesn't do regrets, she is visibly shown to have some regret of her betrayal of Nate. She tries to leave Braddock, due to Braddock killing Moncada, showing that she doesn't work with cold-hearted murderers with no remorse (like Nate and Sully, Chloe only kills in self-defense or people who deserve it). Chloe risked her life by helping Nate when they were both falling out of the plane, by guiding him to the falling crate, even though this cost her time. Finally despite stealing the coordinates from Nate, she leaves him a note apologizing and admitting that she likes him, but feels that she can't afford to trust anyone.
A released deleted scene shows Chloe warning Nate of her treacherous side while flirting with him. The movie novelization expands on her positive side, as she is shown to clearly be in love with Nate as she tells him that she knows he's not Sully and that she's not Sully either, while putting her hand on his shoulder looking for forgiveness and understanding. She flirts, kisses and comforts him while at the beach resort (Chapter 18), indicating that while they are rivals, she does care about him and is sorry that they're rivals. This scene was filmed, as a love story between Nate and Chloe was viewed by a test audience, but this deleted romantic scene has not been released. At the end of the novelization, instead of Chloe being angry, she looks at Nate, smiles and says "Well played Nate".
Abilities[]
Chloe is as tough and capable as she is beautiful. She's known throughout Drake's world as a gifted and adaptable treasure hunter with a long list of impressive accomplishments to her name. Equally comfortable in a gunfight or a fistfight — whatever the occasion demands — she's in hot demand for jobs that lesser fortune hunters would turn down flat. Witty and practical, she makes a great addition to any team, and is often described as "the best driver in the business".
Chloe is quite a good actor as well. When meeting with Drake on the beach she was able to pretend the two had not and when she "ambushed" Drake and Victor Sullivan in Borneo she was able to pretend to be surprised when she encountered the two of them as well as the discovery of Marco Polo's map. Despite being an impressive fighter, Chloe can be outmatched at times. An example is when she and Elena were covering Drake and an injured Jeff from Lazarevic's soldiers and she was ambushed by a soldier who came close to killing her should Drake not have intervened. Another time is when Harry Flynn overpowered her after her true allegiances were revealed, and when fighting Asav by herself, needing Nadine Ross's help to defeat him.
Relationships[]
Nathan Drake[]
Chloe's relationship with Nathan Drake was rocky, as he describes it as "complicated" and he walked out on her for unknown reasons. When they're reunited in Among Thieves, they both wish to reconcile. Nate and Chloe both go to great lengths to save each other; on the train, she stops Flynn from killing Nate and later pleads with him not to go after Lazarevic, refusing to leave Shambhala until he returns. Ultimately, despite her feelings, Chloe accepts that Nate has fallen for Elena and they break up amicably, still good friends (as seen in Drake's Deception).
Elena Fisher[]
Initially, Chloe and Elena Fisher are at odds over their feelings for Nate. Elena's judgment changes after Chloe wants to leave an injured Jeff, Elena's cameraman, behind after he is wounded, and seems to show hostility towards Chloe. When Chloe turns on them to protect her cover, Elena is against Nate's determination to rescue her, but still helps him when he tells her why she did it. At the end of the game, the two women bond when they cooperate in Shambhala.
Victor Sullivan[]
Sully appears to show a large interest in Chloe, as seen in Among Thieves. She doesn't seem to mind him. They appear as friends in Drake's Deception, fist-bumping and joking with each other. Chloe mentions Sully in The Lost Legacy, where she refers to him as a "wise old man".
In the 2022 live-action film adaptation, Chloe works as Sully's associate.
Harry Flynn[]
Chloe says she had a "mostly professional" relationship with Flynn. In Nate's jail cell she tells him she wasn't in on Flynn's plan. Flynn and her still stay somewhat close on Lazarevic's side even after he found out she was working with Nate. For example, In Shambhala, Flynn asked Lazarevic to spare Chloe. In the temple, Chloe also shows concern for Flynn after seeing him shot and beat up.
Charlie Cutter[]
Chloe appears to be good friends with Charlie Cutter. When Charlie is wounded in Syria, it is Chloe who expresses the most concern, expressing she can't even watch when it seems likely Charlie is going to die, and she is the one to bring him out of his drugged state when he is strangling Nate. She also stops Sully from killing him. After Cutter is injured, Chloe decides the hunt is too risky and backs out.
Nadine Ross[]
Though Chloe's relationship with Nadine Ross is initially undermined by mutual antagonism, as the events of The Lost Legacy unfold, they gradually learn to respect one another, and later regard each other with genuine amiability and fondness. They contrast one another in terms of brute force and finesse, shown aptly early on when Nadine breaks a window to manually turn a lock when Chloe takes too long picking it. Despite their differences and the roadblocks that shift their perspectives of one another, they still become close. Chloe explicitly says she trusts Nadine; a rarity among treasure hunters.
Samuel Drake[]
Chloe and Samuel Drake get along well and are allies in The Lost Legacy. Sam helps Chloe and Nadine Ross in the fight against Orca and even saves the life of Nadine and seems to show fondness towards Chloe, who likewise came back to rescue him and refused to leave him, as his brother, whom she is close with would never forgive her if something happened to him. When Chloe enters the Jeep to go after Asav and retrieve the Tusk, Sam is the first one to enter the car and is willing to help Chloe in her mission, though he doesn't help Chloe in the fight against Asav he does provide cover for her in order to enter Asav's train. At the end of the game, the two women are seen together with Sam eating pizza showing their new partnership and close relationship.
