Asav's insurgents are a paramilitary insurgent group in India and the main antagonistic group in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. A large irregular rebel organization founded by Asav; the group has been fighting to ignite a civil war in India for years. The group made fatal enemies with Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross, who almost single-handedly crippled the group and destroyed most of its heavy military equipment. With the loss of Asav and most of the insurgency, what is left of the group scatters.

History[]

Background[]

Originally working as a doctor, Asav used his immense charisma and leadership skills to gather and lead rebels against their homeland of India, convincing his followers that they are fighting to overthrow the tyranny of the Indian government. His insurgents quickly turned several Indian cities into a war zone by the late 2010s. The soldiers fighting under the Indian government were not strong enough to put an end in the war.

The rebellion seems to have been built on socialist principles, but appears to contain both theocratic and nationalistic elements, built on a basis of restoring the glory of the Old Kings Bloodline.

Like other insurgent groups of similar type, the group appears to fund itself mainly from ancient relics and artifacts, sold to the highest bidder. They seem to share history with the PMC Shoreline, who appear to be one of their buyers.

The insurgents are encountered in the beginning of the game and are shown to be quite ruthless to civilians that stand in their way. The first encounter is when Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross sneak into Asav's headquarters in hope of finding any clues on the whereabouts of the Tusk of Ganesh. However, they are spotted by Asav's insurgents. With clear intentions of holding a grudge against the duo, Asav orders his men to shoot them before "[throwing] their bodies in the river.”

In Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, two insurgents having a conversation vastly underestimate Chloe and Nadine's prowess in combat and are subsequently killed. The insurgents are spread out throughout the Western Ghats in an attempt to stop the duo but all or most are killed.

In chapter five, the Insurgents ambush Chloe and Nadine when they exit the temple with Asav's APC and are killed when they attempt to stop the duo.

The Insurgents pose a threat to the duo throughout the game.

Following Asav’s death, the remaining insurgents either deserted and became neutral civilians or were imprisoned by the Indian Armed Forces.

Unit types[]

Light soldiers[]

Light soldiers are the most common insurgent types. They wear M81 Woodland camouflage uniforms and use handguns such as the Para .45, Desert 5, Raffica, Micro 9mm and Pistole but they also use long guns such as the INSAS or Type 95. Light soldiers can endure 2 hits in melee combat before dying. They're also vulnerable to headshots due to a lack of helmets. They are easily defeated and require little strategy but are more dangerous in groups. They are also better at sticking to cover in higher difficulties. They also will grab Chloe from behind if given the chance.

Medium soldiers[]

Medium soldiers wear brown uniform shirts, a Multicam camouflage pattern vest and mostly carry long guns such as the INSAS, Arrowhead A3c, Type 95, Mettler M-30, FAl and P90, but there are also medium soldiers who are are armed with handguns such as the Para .45, Krivosk-XS, Desert 5, Micro 9mm, RKL-155 and Pistole. Medium soldiers are also armed with Mk-NDI hand grenades. Some soldiers may also be wearing M1 helmets, which can be shot off in order to achieve headshots. They are still rather unprotected against body shots, however. They are much more durable in hand-to-hand combat than light insurgents, requiring three melee attacks to kill them, but when Chloe attacks a medium soldier in higher difficulties, they'll either attempt to melee attack ber. They'll also attempt to grab the player from behind.

Shotgunners[]

Shotgunners wear uniforms similar to medium soldiers, but they wear red berets and bandanas across their face, as well as bandoliers with shotgun shells. These soldiers carry shotguns such as the Spezzotti 12 Gauge, S-12 and US-AN 12 as their main weapons and may be hard to avoid at close range. They're as durable as medium soldiers in hand-to-hand combat, requiring three melee strikes. In higher difficulty, when Chloe engages in melee combat with a shotgunner, they will attempt to melee attack her, they will also attempt to grab the player from behind.

Snipers[]

Snipers are deadly marksmen who wear light brown hooded uniforms, ghillie pants, and a red bandana over their faces. In the "Hello Belur" encounter in Chapter 6: The Gatekeeper, they start wearing helmets. The sniper rifles they use have laser attachments, which unfortunately for them make them quite easy to spot. They are much more durable in hand-to hand combat, requiring 5 melee attacks to kill them. In Crushing difficulty, snipers will melee attack Chloe once by pinning her to a a hard surface with their sniper rifle or kick her and hit her with their sniper rifles as clubs. They will also attempt to grab the player from behind. They were initially armed with Mazur LDR sniper rifles, but during Chapter 10: End of the Line, they use Harbinger sniper rifles.

Rocketeers[]

Rocketeers wear brown caps, a red bandana and carry a backpack full of rockets. They use RPGs, which can be seriously harmful to the player if not taken out quickly, but their lack of armor makes them glass cannons. They are, however, durable in melee combat as shotgunners and medium soldiers, requiring 3 melee attacks to kill them. In higher difficulties, they will engage in melee combat with Chloe if she's close enough. They will also attempt to grab the player from behind.

Armored soldiers[]

Armored soldiers are the second toughest insurgent type. These soldiers have thick body armor, which protects them from many bullets. They mostly use P90s, assault rifles such as the Type 95 or Carrigan 53, shotguns such as the Spezzotti 12 Gauge, S-12 or US-AN 12 or rarely China Lake GLs.

There are three types of armored soldiers; the first type wears a red bandana, a belt of spare shotgun shells and and a pair of elbow pads, the second type wears a red bandana and a ammo belt, while the third type wears a black ski mask, two ammo belts and a pair of black kneepads. The fist type of armored soldiers use either shotguns or the China Lake GL, while the second and third types use P90s and assault rifles.

Some soldiers will fire rapid bursts of gunfire with their P90s or assault rifles and hide behind cover. The armored shotgunners are more deadly, as they walk towards you without stopping and may get a few good shots in before dying. Armored grenadiers are lethal on higher difficulties as they are difficult to bring down, and one grenade can easily kill or seriously stun players. Once their helmet is off, it takes 2 to 4 melee attacks to kill them. Insurgent armored soldiers are also vulnerable to stealth kills as long as their helmet is off. Chloe can also stealth kill armored insurgents with aerial takedowns, even if their helmet is on, but if they know Chloe's presence, it will only remove their helmet. Chloe also can kill them by pulling them down a ledge.

Brutes[]

Brutes are the most dangerous units to face. They wear the heaviest armor of all Insurgents and carry large DShKs, which can shred through the player's health with ease. Body shots do almost no damage, so a recommended strategy is to remove their helmets to maximize damage. Just like the Shoreline brutes, you can take their helmet off either by an aerial takedown, shooting their helmet off with a high caliber handgun, or blowing it up with a grenade or a grenade launcher. After that, you can either use a second aerial takedown to melee kill them by snapping their neck, shoot them in the head, throw a grenade at them or fire a grenade launcher at them.

Hunters[]

Hunters are a unique type of enemy that only appear on Hard difficulty or higher. They prefer to charge the player and grab them in a chokehold, and their appearance is marked by heavy breathing (thanks to their gas masks). When the player is grabbed, a quick-time event allows them to escape a Hunter's grasp; failing to do so in time will result in Chloe's death. Due to their running speed, making them a priority is highly recommended. They also possess machine pistols such as the Micro 9mm or RK-155, but only use them if caught off-guard. Insurgent Hunters are also vulnerable to stealth kills.

Trivia[]

  • They use a "Cobra" call sign.
  • It appears that their ideology is a socialist one; in one conversation, one soldier can be heard saying that "Asav says that the poor shall rise against their oppressors."
  • Insurgents are seen with Mk 2 frag grenades on their webbing. However, they use Mk-NDI grenades instead.
  • They are the sixth of enemies of Asian origin, After Eddy Raja' pirates, the Museum guards, the Turkish Police, the Yemeni Police and the Indian Ocean pirates. They are also the second antagonistic group to be a rebel group (after Roberto Guerro's army). The insurgents are the second group of enemies to use armored grenadiers, after Shoreline. The insurgents also hold the record for being the fourth antagonistic group for not using the AK-47 as their main starting assault rifle, after Katherine Marlowe's agents, the Indian Ocean Pirates and the Rossi Estate Thugs.
  • In Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, there are five types of helmets insurgent soldiers wear:
  • The first is just a plain M1 helmet, the second M1 helmet has camouflage netting, the third M1 helmet has a Woodland camouflage pattern helmet cover, the fourth type has a grey black helmet cover and a pair of goggles strapped to the top of it and the fifth type has the same design, except the goggles has a thinner strap. The first three types of helmets are worn by insurgent medium soldiers, the third type of helmet are worn by snipers, while the fourth type is worn by insurgent armored soldiers. The fifth type meanwhile is worn by insurgent brutes.
  • The insurgents have some similarities to their Shoreline allies:
  • They have both brutes, armored soldiers, unarmored and lightly armored snipers, shotgunners, normal soldiers and hunters. They also have normal soldiers who use shotguns.
  • But the insurgents and Shoreline also have their differences:
  • For example, the insurgents don't have unarmored grenadiers and armored snipers. The type of head protection the insurgent and Shoreline snipers use are also different, the insurgent snipers, for example protect their heads with helmets, while Shoreline snipers use ballistic face masks to protect themselves from headshots. The Shoreline enforcers who pose as shotgunners wield two-handed pump-action shotguns while the insurgent light and medium soldiers used one-handed break action shotguns.
