John Dee was an English consultant to Queen Elizabeth I. He devoted much of his life to the study of alchemy, divination and Hermetic philosophy.
History[]
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception[]
He plays a role in the events of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. Along with Queen Elizabeth & Francis Walsingham, John Dee sent Francis Drake on a secret mission to find Iram as he circumnavigated the globe at the same time. After Drake returned with no results, he built a decoder (in the image of an astrolabe) that, when joined with Francis Drake's ring, revealed the message 'Long Hidden', an anagram for Drake's ship, the Golden Hind. He also signed Drake's map with a mark that almost reads 007 in English.
Dee had a lab beneath a château in a forest in Eastern France. The lab was located underneath a tower with Sabean script. This means he had traced clues to Iram back to the Crusades, just like T. E. Lawrence. In the main room of his lab, a table was used for experiments, inscribed with Sabean script. He wrote a message in Enochean script on the table, which when decoded with his previous decoding device and the ring, read "The altar guards the entrance to the underworld." After one moved the altar, there would be a passage which would lead to the crypts of Lord Godfrey, a Crusader who lived during the 12th century. His tomb held one half of an amulet, again with Sabean script, which helped Drake find Iram.
Trivia[]
- Drake's map had Sabean script around it for unexplained reasons; this is unusual since Sabean script was used by the Arabians (who lived years before Dee). The logical inference would be that Dee did this, since he traced clues to find Iram all the way back to the Crusades.
