The M4 is normally the first 'elite' weapon the player acquires in single-player campaign and is an upgrade over normal weapons.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (2007)
The M4 has a heightened rate of fire and more accuracy than the AK-47. Not only does it remain accurate with prolonged fire, making it a great choice for long range combat, but it also slows down hit targets more so than the AK-47. It is first acquired in Trapped. It has an ammo capacity of 96.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009)
The weapon appears in the second half of Uncharted 2, beginning with Locomotion. From that point on, it can be found in almost every chapter. It became one of the elite weapons used by Zoran Lazarevic's soldiers, along with SAS-12. It has an ammo capacity of 160.
Uncharted: Golden Abyss (2012)
The M4 first appears in "Farther Than It Looks". It can be found in almost every chapter from then on. It has an ammo capacity of 128.
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (2016)
The M4 is only available in multiplayer. It was released alongside the Survival game mode update. The M4 can be dropped through DLC weapon chests or purchased for 400 Uncharted Points.
The M4 has medium recoil, medium accuracy, medium range, medium fire-rate and low damage. It is best used at medium range.
In Drake's Fortune and Among Thieves, the M4 is seemingly modeled on the Colt Model 653, a carbine based on the M16 rifle. It's distinguished by the non-detachable carry handle, lack of a step in the barrel for mounting an M203, and lack of a brass deflector. In Uncharted 4, however, it is a correctly modeled M4 carbine.
As in Uncharted, the reload animation in Uncharted 2 is wrong—instead of pulling back the charging handle or hitting the bolt catch, Nate reloads it like an AK-47 by pulling back an invisible charging handle on the dust cover.
