Mountaineering is the seventeenth chapter of Among Thieves. After waking up in the Tibetan village, Nate was taken to see Karl Schäfer, whom convinced him to find the remains of his expedition and see how dangerous the Cintamani Stone truly could be. While making their way through the ice caves, Tenzin and Nate are attacked by a yeti-like monster
Story[]
While making their way through the caves, Nate and Tenzin spotted a small pack of wolves, although this did not deter them from going deeper. Shortly after they discovered a body, and learned it was one of Schäfer's men based on a drawing of the Cintamani Stone. The bridge on which the body lay collapsed at that point, with the two barely escaping certain death. Nate then made his way around the cave, and convinced Tenzin to jump the bridge-less gap, barely catching him as he made the jump. Tenzin then caught Nate shortly after when a ledge collapsed beneath him after a long rope-jump.
Afterwards they heard a whimpering canine sound, and shortly after discovered that the wolfpack had been brutally killed. Unbeknownst to them they were being watched by some strange animal, with Tenzin being convinced there was a ghost around. In the next cavern Tenzin was attacked by the monster, with Nate returning just in time to save him using a pistol he took from another dead explorer. Although the animal appeared largely unphazed by the bullets, Nate did manage to keep it busy long enough for Tenzin to regain consciousness and stab it in the back when it had knocked Nate's pistol away. Despite taking seemingly mortal wounds, the monster remained agile enough to easily and quickly escape.
With the animal gone, the two resumed their way through the caves until they stumbled upon the entrance of the ice temple.
Walkthrough[]
Nate's health and mobility will have recovered by now. Follow Tenzin through the ice caves, which are fairly linear and have little to no room for exploration. You will need to use ropes to swing across gaps a few times, but up until you find the first corpse have to do barely any climbing. After you do you need to find a nearby broken rope ladder, after which Tenzin boosts you up. Climb along the ice wall until you reach the other side of the recently-broken bridge, then help Tenzin make the leap across. Afterwards follow him across the next gap and past the slain wolves into a much larger cavern.
Go through the passage on the left, after which your way back is blocked by icicles. Climb the wall up ahead and turn around at the top to be able to reach a hidden area. Climb down to pick up a P08-9mm next to the corpse, a rather generic pistol (with infinite ammo), and use it to destroy the icicles blocking your way out. Once you are freed you will run into a monster attacking Tenzin. Shoot it, until it rushes and grabs you, then shoot it in the head to free yourself. Repeat this once more, although Tenzin will force it to flee once it knocks your gun away on the second grab.
Afterwards, return with Tenzin to where you found the pistol, and boost him up the rope ladder. Follow him up after he knocks down the crate and keep following him until you reach an apparent dead end, where you must shoot down a nearby crate (you can grab more 9mm ammo from the nearby body). Use the rope attached to the now-gone crate to sling across the gap, after which you can climb up to reach a broken staircase. Follow it to the area explored in the next chapter "Heart of Ice".
