The Order was a Hermetic secret society originally established by Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th Century. It was formed from numerous secret British societies. By modern times, the head of the Order was Katherine Marlowe. Its purpose was to control Britain's enemies through espionage, deception, and fear. Its ultimate goal was to find Iram of the Pillars.
