Tree of Life is the twenty-sixth and final chapter of Among Thieves. After entrusting a heavily injured Elena to Chloe, Nate left for the Tree of Life in a final attempt to stop and defeat Zoran Lazarević once and for all.

Completing the chapter without dying on Normal difficulty or harder in Among Thieves Remastered will unlock the bronze trophy YOLO Among Thieves.

Story[]

He's Mine[]

Shortly after the start of the chapter, Nate entered the core area of the Tree of Life, and spied on Lazarević who had arrived there before him, alongside a handful of accompanying men. Lazarević proceeded to drink from the bright blue pool of tree sap underneath the Tree, with Nate watching as his burnscars miraculously faded away, causing him to whisper quietly in surprise. Lazarević heard him, prompting Nate to quickly attempt to assassinate him with several hits straight to the chest. While his men returned fire on Nate, Lazarević stood back up, then ordered his men to cease fire. Desperate, Nate decided to shoot the pool of sap, knowing it was highly flammable. This knocked down Lazarević and killed his men, although he got back up again, and started to chase Nate down.

In the resulting firefight Nate repeatedly managed to seriously harm Lazarević by shooting pockets of resin close by to him. This simultaneously caused the tree to take even more damage aside from the burning pool underneath it. Eventually the regenerative tree sap failed to restore Lazarević enough.

No Compassion, No Mercy[]

On the ground, Lazarević was held at gunpoint by Nate. He taunted Nate, asking him how many men he had killed, even only today, and that the two were no different. He tried to get under his skin, by pointing out he too had no compassion, nor mercy, then ordered him to open fire. Nate refused, which prompted Lazarević to chuckle, as he noted that Nate lacked the will. Nate pointed out that maybe he did not, but the approaching guardians did. He then fled the scene, leaving Lazarević screaming in terror as the guardians started pounding on him en masse.

As Nate fled the Tree of Life he had to cross a long stone bridge that was slowly falling apart, with the city of Shambhala crumbling around him due to the damage the Tree took. Eventually he reached the end and reunited with Chloe and Elena. At this point one of the nearby fallen guardians managed to back up and attack Chloe from behind, causing the both of them to slide down the broken bridge's sloe. Nate slid down after them and managed to both kill the guardian and save Chloe right before she fell off the edge.

I Haven't Thought That Far Ahead[]

The two manage to recover, with Nate explaining that he "saved the world", as to why the city is falling apart. They safely returned to Elena, and carried her out of the city as it fell apart behind them. They laid her down upon returning to the monastery, and Nate attempted to wake her up and reassured her that she would be fine, although Elena did not react to him.

The story then skipped to the Tibetan village, with Nate and Tenzin giving prayers at a small shrine in the city center. Chloe arrived as well, and Nate told her she should play the hero more often, although she refused. She then asked him if he loved Elena, and instead of an answer he apologized to her instead. Chloe did not seem to mind, and instead told him to actually tell Elena. As she left she noted he would "miss this ass". Elena then came outside, supported by Sully, who noted the lack of a giant sapphire. After some small banter he asked which way Chloe went, then left Elena with Nate. Elena pointed out that Nate did good, and that Schäfer would approve of his actions. She also asked him where they would go next, but Nate replied that he had not thought that far ahead.

Next she asked how scared he was that she was going to die, on a scale of one to ten, with Nate giving it only a four. The two continued their banter, as Elena told him he was at least an eight, although Nate considered the guardians an eight instead. Upon being asked what a ten would be Nate replied with "clowns". She then joked about how he had to believe she died, and that he was crying, despite Nate's insistence that she was unconscious and that it was raining. Eventually he relented, telling that he'd at least give her a five.

Walkthrough[]

At the start of the chapter you only need to move forwards and drop down to initiate a cutscene. The bossfight against Lazarević ensues immediately after, within the terrain surrounding the flaming pool of tree sap. Lazarević will continuously chase after you and use his shotgun, which is only truly deadly from up close. If he manages to catch you physically you need to press Square to escape his grasp, which usually results in being thrown away. Attempting to return fire (there are several M4s scattered around) will do little other than annoy him, although Mk-NDI grenades can be effective.

The only guaranteed way to actually damage Lazarević is by shooting the clumps of resin spread throughout the area whenever Lazarević is close enough to them. The explosive reaction will hurt him, and after several times will trigger a small cutscene. After the second time he will begin to lob pairs of grenades at you, upping this to groups of three at once after significantly damaging him for a third time. After each phase the terrain will also deteriorate more and more, with pieces of terrain and resin disappearing due to the roots vanishing. Lazarević will not change tactics however, so simply continuing luring him around the terrain, periodically turning around to shoot any resin close to him. The bossfight will be over upon dealing enough explosive damage for a fourth and final time.

Afterwards you only need to do some simple jumping and climbing as the bridge slowly collapses around you. Upon reaching Chloe there is a final segment where you need to shoot a guardian assailing Chloe, after which the gameplay is effectively over. At this point you only need to watch the final cutscene to end the main story.
