Turrets are a recurring gameplay mechanic and usable equipment in the Uncharted series. They are typically used by enemy combatants, serving to lay down suppressive fire and limiting player mobility, but are in turn static emplacements. At times some turrets can be commandeered and used to mow down enemy soldiers.

History[]

Drake's Fortune[]

Unlocking the Past gameplay 4

Nate manning a turret in "Unlocking the Past".

Eddy Raja's pirates made use of a total of five turrets in Drake's Fortune. The first was shortly used on a gunboat in "Ambushed", forcing Nate and Elena to hide in cover. The second and third were encountered in "The Fortress", overlooking a courtyard and tunnel each. The fourth was in "Unlocking the Past, overseeing a large courtyard. The final fifth turret was used as part of the trap in "Trapped".

They have unlimited ammunition and a shield surrounding the gun barrel, offering some defense, but are always placed on stilts allowing users to fire while standing. They also cannot rotate too far to the sides. Due to this anyone using it is vulnerable to attacks at the legs and being flanked, assuming there is no cover. Mk-NDI grenades or the M79 grenade launcher are also useful in taking down pirates manning a turret.

These machine gun turrets are modeled after the Browning M1919, a .30 caliber medium machine gun that was used during World War II and the Vietnam War.

Among Thieves[]

Zoran Lazarević's troops use gun turrets to defend certain locations. The majority of them are soviet DShK heavy machine guns (e.g. Chapter 6 and Chapter 7). The turrets, which are used in later chapters (e.g. Chapter 19), are GAU - 19/A heavy Gatling machine guns. Unlike Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, these don't have unlimited ammunition. Instead, they have a certain amount of ammo depending on the difficulty.

In "The Dig", there is a gun turret that Lazarević's soldiers use. To destroy it, the player has to throw a grenade inside the building where it's housed.

The Heavy Weapons Troop uses a portable version of gun turrets, the GAU - 19, which makes the player move slower when equipped.

Drake's Deception[]

Turrets first appear in "Abducted" in a set of two. The pirates use these turret-mounted DShKs to keep Nate in cover, while other pirates either flank him or kill him when he runs out of cover. Katherine Marlowe's agents also use turrets on the top of trucks such as in "The Settlement" and "London Underground".

Multiplayer[]

Turrets are now a common appearance on the multiplayer maps. The turrets have 1000 bullets and cannot be destroyed. They also have shields; the only way to kill the user is to attack them from behind, or use explosives such as grenades or RPGs. It is also possible to shoot the gunner from the front by aiming at the unprotected upper frontshield.

The turrets on the Chateau are on either side of the map. Two of them are at the Team Deathmatch spawns on one side of the map and are easily accessible from the beginning. Another one is on the other side of the map.

On the Airstrip, there is a turret near the Team Deathmatch spawn for the Villains mounted high. Parallel, and far on the other side of the map, is another turret that is not available for use until a bomb hits the communications array above, in which case it falls over and allows players to climb it and reach the turret.

On London Underground, there is a turret right outside of the subway entrance, where the Villains first get off the train.

A Thief's End[]

A turret first seen in the Panamanian prison's courtyard in Sam's fake flashback. The turret was manned by a guard who used it to fire at Hector Alcazar, Sam and Alcazar's drug cartel henchmen. It was destroyed by a henchman wielding a RPG. Two turrets are seen later in Scotland. They were used by Shoreline. The machine gun mounted on the turrets in A Thief's End and The Lost Legacy was a Stoner 63, a 5.56mm NATO modular weapons system that can be converted into a carbine, an assault rifle or a light machine gun. It is then saw again in the "Jeep" encounter in Libertalia.
