Development history
Film producer Avi Arad has stated that he is working with a division of Sony to develop the film adaptation of Uncharted.[1] In response to a question posed to Richard Lemarchand, lead game designer of Naughty Dog, on whether he would like to see a film adaptation of Uncharted, he replied "no comment".[2] Since then, Columbia Pictures has confirmed that an Uncharted film is being developed. It is to be written by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer and produced by Avi Arad, Charles Roven, and Alex Gartner.[3][4] As of June 30, 2009 it was confirmed that the Uncharted film has been in development for the last year-and-a-half.[5] Nathan Fillion has expressed interest in playing Nathan Drake, and started a campaign on Twitter to encourage fans to support him in this endeavour.[6] In a 2011 interview, Naughty Dog told PlayStation University how close they really are with the development of the movie and that they have trust with all who are working on it.[7]
David O. Russell
Plot
Writer/director David O. Russell has said that he wishes to bring Drake's extended family into the story, saying in an interview, "This idea really turns me on that there's a family that's a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities ... [a family] that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and metes out justice."[8] O. Russell later denied that he had made any such claims, and that Wahlberg was not confirmed for the role of Nathan Drake.[9]
In February 2011, in an interview with IGN, O. Russell again went against his own claims by saying that he wants a family dynamic in the film. He said, "I think if we take that family dynamic that we have in The Fighter, and put that in terms of a grander stage, with a crime family that metes out justice in the world of art and antiquities...They're like the Sopranos in some ways."[10]
Since the takeover by Neil Burger in 2011, the plot written by Russell has been changed, with the 'Soprano-style family' idea removed entirely.
Casting
In mid November 2010, it was reported that Mark Wahlberg would play Nathan Drake in the film, following an interview he did with MTV. He also claimed that David O. Russell was currently writing the film, with the hope that Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci would also star in it. He claimed that filming would hopefully begin during the summer.[11]
Mark Wahlberg later said in an interview that he is set to play Nathan Drake. He also said that filming will hopefully begin during the summer and that the film will star him, Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro.[12][13]
Nathan Fillion campaign
Actor Nathan Fillion had expressed interest in playing Nathan Drake, and started a campaign on Twitter to encourage fans to support him in this endeavour.[14] Following the news that O. Russell wanted Mark Wahlberg to star in the role, Fillion expressed his support for the casting decision.[15] After the departure of Wahlberg, there is the possibility that Fillion may be considered for the role again.
Departure of O. Russell
O. Russell turned in a script to Sony either in April or May 2011, which reportedly featured "a bevy of characters not in the video game." The script took the plot in a direction Sony did not want, with the result being "an art-heist movie involving a family of international thieves, using the game as a loose template." {C}As a result, O. Russell has left the film's development.[16]
Neil Burger
Takeover
Following the departure of David O' Russell (see "Previous development history" section below), on July 7, 2011 it was reported that Neil Burger will write and direct the film, after "producers Ari Arad, Charles Roven and Alex Gartner sparked to his new take" on the film.[17]
Plot
Burger has gone back to the original PlayStation 3 game to make sure the movie follows the storyline of the game. He has also tossed out the previous script, and is currently working on a new one. In June 2012 producer Avi Arad expressed hope that a series of Uncharted films will be made, saying "I think what will happen with Uncharted is that it will be the first of many, because it will be so fun."[18]
Departure of Neil Burger
On August 24, 2012 it was announced that Neil Burger had dropped out of directing the film, and that Marianna and Cormac Wibberley (the writers of both National Treasure movies and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle) were now rewriting the movie's script, but no official director has been named.[19]
Further developments
At the end of August 2013, producer Ari Arad discussed the film at an event in Beijing. He said: "I think Uncharted will be very successful. It’s a father and son game. There are things about it that are interesting. I think the world of antiquities theft, there are many countries in the world that realized they’re being robbed and they’re trying to recoup these important pieces. Now, the script has a lot of character [and] I think that has a shot at being the first one [to succeed].”[20]
Seth Gordon
On February 4, 2014, Deadline report that Seth Gordon will direct the film. [21] Director Gordon has set the film to begin shoot in early 2015 [22] and was announced for June 10, 2017 release date.[23] On November 12, 2014, the studio has hired Mark Boal to write the film's script. It was revealed that after Wahlberg, Chris Pratt was in talks to portray Nathan Drake, but he reportedly declined the offer.[24]
Departure of Seth Gordon
On June 24, 2015 Seth Gordon left the project over creative differences.[25]
